Scrawl Insert Rework

Inspired by my own frustration with @bigpotatogames packaging design for their Scrawl game.

Don't you hate it when this happens?

You grab your favourite game off the shelf, open up the box and everything is a mess!

Everything is all mixed up, you spend precious game-time sorting everything out before you can play.

It's sooo annoying - So this week I decided to do something about it!
I put on my Packaging Designer hat, grabbed a pen and got to work.

I hate Vac-tray inserts like this, they're ugly, brittle and not eco-friendly. This one is particular annoying as it doesn't even hold the product well.

After some quick measurements of all the parts, I came up with 3 options. I went for the simplest one - 2 parts that slot together.

I cut out the design with an old @hellofreshuk box I had lying around. It's not quite the specification I'd use if I was designing the real packaging, but it'll do for now.

I fitted it, gave it a shake - worked perfectly!

Box inserts are often an afterthought, but for games like these, they're an essential part of the ongoing user experience. Don't underestimate their impact!

There's always room for improvement when designing, and this is no exception. We could add and branded print to the insert to really make it punchy when you open the box.

This box is always way too big (I know, perceived value - Blah. Blah. Blah.). But this box is around 75% air! There's plenty of scope for improving things here, too.

I love this game - it's one of my favourites! I know, having designed literally 100s of boxes, things happen during the fog of development. But sometimes it's the little details that can have a lasting impact.

If anyone from Big Potato Games is listening to this, slide into my DMs, and I'll hit you up with my cutter guide for the insert!
