How to Stop Taking Things Personally

STOP! Taking things so personally:
A how-to guide...

Prone to taking a negative view on things?
Sensitive to words of others?
Low self-esteem?

Sounds like you need to stop taking things so personally.

As Healthy Place say in their article:
"Taking things personally may cause you to feel inadequate, ashamed, or even angry at yourself or the other person. It's disempowering and can worsen your self-esteem. However, you can build your self-esteem when you stop taking things personally."

Let's look at the 7 ways you can stop this and start to build up your self-esteem:

1. Realise:
Other’s rudeness is not about you. It's likely to be a reflection of their issues.

2. Ask Yourself:
What else could the comment/behaviour mean? E.g. Don't smile when says 'hi', could just be shy.

3. Take Comments and criticism:
Be constructive! As yourself - is there truth in this? What can I learn?

4. A Different Perspective:
Ask yourself - how an unbiased outsider would see the situation?

5. Realise:
You can't please everyone!

6. Know:
That you're not defined by your mistakes or criticism.

7. Realise:
Self-worth depends on you - not what others say about you.

This is not a quick fix, it will take time, effort and persistence to get results. Especially if it's not something that comes naturally to you.

Remember, you can do it. If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
